The Wine Festival in Perfugas, in northern Sardinia, is an event that is organized annually in the days between the end of February and the beginning of March to celebrate food and wine and local traditions. Thanks to the Chimbinu cun Binu Association and the collaboration of other third sector and institutional realities, the historic center of the town is “tinged” with local wine, which is combined with the typical dishes presented by local producers.
The event, characterized by wine and food tastings, music, dances and guided tours, bears the same name as the organizing association, which recalls “su chimbìnu“, a Sardinian dialect term that identifies the five-litre container used in ancient times for sale of bulk wine.
To reach Perfugas, from northern Italy, the Livorno – Olbia ferries may be convenient, also operating in winter with departures in the morning or in the evening; they are those of the Moby and Grimaldi Lines shipping companies and take about 9 hours to travel the route. For those departing from central or southern Italy, the Civitavecchia – Olbia ferries of the Tirrenia fleet are preferable; the departure is in the evening and the duration of the journey is 8 hours. Armchairs, cabins and catering and entertainment services are available on board. After arriving in the port of Olbia, you can continue along the approximately 70 kilometers that separate it from the destination, by car or by bus.
After the party, it is strongly recommended not to drive and to stay overnight in a local structure.
Chimbinu cun Binu: the wine festival of Perfugas
The Perfugas municipality is located in the province of Sassari, in Sardinia. On the occasion of the wine festival, the historic center becomes the scene of a traditional food and wine festival during which the stands of the cellars are opened, tastings of wines and hot dishes are provided, songs and dances are performed and guided tours are offered.
2023 program (7th edition)
The wine festival reaches its seventh edition in 2023 and it is held on Saturday 4 March, starting in the afternoon and continuing until late. Let’s see the program in detail:
- 17:30 guided tour of the Sacred Well (reservation required);
- 18:30 opening of the stands used for the sale of glasses;
- 19:00 tasting of wines and hot dishes from the cellars in the streets of the historic centre;
- 11.30 pm opening of the tensile structure in piazza Mannu square for the continuation with music and bar.
To cheer up the evening also “Cantos e Ballos” by the musicians of the local group “Balar” and the performances of the “Coro de Tzaramonte”, of the traveling musical group “Gli Sbandati” of Aggius, of the tenor “Santa Sarbana” of Silanus, of “PM2 Music” and the “”Bateras Beat” of Sassari. The event continues with the dancing night animated by the music of DJ JLT.
Advance sales are also available in some shops in the town to buy the glass and go directly to the stand on the day of the event without having to queue.
The territory
This town of about 80 square meters and 2500 inhabitants is the center of the historic region of Anglona and it is located on the edge of a valley terrace, where the Silanis stream flows into the Altana stream, a tributary of the Coghinas river. The local economy is based on the breeding of sheep, goats and cattle, on the cultivation of cereals, vegetables, wine grapes and fruit and, in recent times, on tourism. Anglona is bordered by the sea, rivers and mountains and has numerous hills and plateaus of volcanic or calcareous nature on a tuff base.
The municipal area can boast archaic historical roots, among the oldest in all of Sardinia, and various archaeological remains from the lower Paleolithic, the Neolithic, the pre-Nuragian, Nuragic and Roman periods, some of which are kept in the local Paleobotanical Archaeological Museum. There are also tombs of the giants, domus de janas and nuraghes.
Right in the historic center, in front of the church of Santa Maria degli Angeli, there is a nuragic complex with the sacred well of Predio Canopoli, which takes the name of the owner of the land where this important and refined monument was found, dating back to the end of the Middle Bronze Age. In the aforementioned parish church, also home to the Diocesan Museum, the remarkable Retablo di San Giorgio is kept. In the locality of Niedda there is another source with a collection tank from the Nuragic era.
The wines of Perfugas
In the Damiano estate, located in Padru Maltesu, white Vermentino and Tocai vines are grown, as well as Merlot, Cabernet, Cannonau, Sangiovese and Syrah black grapes, from which the reds Foe, Mantelli and Padru Maltesu are made, the whites Renalzu and Nord Est, and the sparkling wines 11 July (rosé) and 8560 (white).
The most famous winemaker in Perfugas is Carlo Deperu, winemaker, agronomist and oenologist who, together with his wife Tatiana Holler, cultivates six hectares of vineyards between Anglona and Gallura, between the municipalities of Perfugas and Bortigiadas, with the native Cannonau black grape varieties , Muristellu (Bovale Sardo) and Cabernet, and those with white grapes Vermentino, Malvasia and Nasco. Deperu Holler wines are genuine: Fria is a Vermentino di Sardegna DOC, Familia, Oberaìa and Prama Dorada are Isola dei Nuraghi IGT.
