Let’s find out which are the beaches of the Sorrento Coast, along the stretch of coast of the Sorrento peninsula that overlooks the Gulf of Naples and winds between Vico Equense and Sorrento, also knowing the salient characteristics and the municipalities to which they belong, in order, from east to west.
To get to this part of the coast of the Campania region, of which Sorrento is the most important centre, you can travel by hydrofoil departing from Naples, the islands of the gulf, the Amalfi coast or Salerno; there are also some internal routes that connect some seaside villages in the area. The sea connections to and from the Sorrento Coast are a good alternative solution to traveling by car or bus.
Where to go to the sea on the Sorrento Coast
So let’s see where you can swim on the Sorrento Coast, discovering the possibilities that each municipality has on the side overlooking the Gulf of Naples.
Vico Equense
The first beach on the Sorrento coast is Scrajo Mare, where a historic bathing establishment with snack bar and restaurant manages this strip of small pebbles protected by the cliffs that have shaped its pointed profile. The sulphurous water springs that flow near the plant are exploited thanks to a tank. It is located in the municipality of Vico Equense and the road above is via Luigi Serio street (SS145).
The Tartaruga beach, made of sand and pebbles of lava origin, is approximately 70 meters long, entirely free, although it is still possible to rent sunbeds and umbrellas and takes its name from the rock which is located in front of it about 50 meters away. Separated from via Luigi Serio street by a narrow path, it can be easily reached thanks to the taxi-boat service from Marina di Vico, where there is the small port of Vico Equense, in a basin under the ridge on which the town stands.
The Antico Bagno Conca delle Sirene manages a pebble and sandy beach, about 50 meters long, located in via Cristoforo Colombo street, at the Marina di Vico Equense. In addition to being a bathing establishment, it is a bar-restaurant that offers locally sourced fish and seasonal products.
Marina di Vico is the coast of Vico, 800 meters away from the town centre, characterized by the small fishing port which, however, does not affect the clarity of the sea as the maritime traffic, of small boats such as the taxi-boats which here are based, it is negligible. The beach is made of clear pebbles, more than 100 meters long and more than 30 meters wide; largely occupied by bathing establishments, it has a free stretch where there are also small boats parked.
The lido Hotel Sporting, on Corso Filangieri street in Vico Equense, manages a beach of just over 100 meters, of fine dark sand and small pebbles, accessible, even to those who are not customers of the accommodation facility, via an elevator. In addition to the bathing establishment with bar and restaurant, there is a free section.
The Marina di Seiano (fraction of Vico Equense), also known as Aequa, begins with the Pezzolo beach. Dark volcanic sand and pebbles make up the coast of more than 100 meters, many of which are free to use; there is also an equipped bathing establishment. Between the limestone wall and the beach there is a tunnel from the 2nd century AD which leads to a Roman villa, currently an archaeological site.
The Concessione Pia beach, separated from the Pezzolo by a cliff, is free, with coarse sand and pebbles for about 50 metres, and then becomes pebbly for the next 60 metres, where, in the immediate vicinity of the port of Seiano, the sand is more fine and there is also a small equipped bathing establishment.
Le Axidie is the bathing establishment of the hotel of the same name that manages this beach of golden sand and clear pebbles, about 150 meters long, alongside the port of Seiano.
Chicchi Beach is the concessionaire of the sand and gravel beach, located, proceeding from east to west, on the final part of Marina d’Aequa. In addition to the establishment, there is a stretch of free use.
At the end of the Marina di Aequa there is the Lido Isola Verde, a bathing establishment with a bar-restaurant, and the adjacent free beach. It is sand close to large stones which form a small, slightly raised terrace.
Meta
The beach of Marina di Alimuri, in the municipality of Meta, is made of medium-sized pebbles and is about 200 meters long, with bathing establishments and a free stretch in the centre, where a cliff perpendicular to the beach stretches out to sea. On the rest of the Traversa III Alimuri promenade there are restaurants and a hotel.
The Meta Mare marina also has more than one fine sandy beach: the first is one of the largest on the Sorrento coast, almost 300 meters long, with various equipped bathing establishments and a free area on one side; the second, separated from the latter by via Angelo Cosenza street, just over 50 meters long, has a free stretch as well as a bathing establishment with restaurant; the third, smaller one, located at one end of via Gian Battista Liguori street, is the one in concession to the Giosuè a Mare hotel, where it is possible to rent bathing equipment.
Piano di Sorrento
At Marina di Cassano, next to the tourist landing place, in the area that falls within the municipality of Piano di Sorrento, there is a sandy beach about 100 meters long, with two equipped bathing establishments and bars, restaurants and a small stretch of free fruition.
Sant’Agnello
The beach of Santa Caterina, of fine sand, about 70 meters long and quite wide, is located in the municipality of Sant’Agnello, on the border with the fraction of Marina di Cassano in the municipality of Piano di Sorrento. There is also a free stretch, where a service for bathing equipment is available upon request and at reasonable prices. The bathing establishments are located on the platforms set up on the cliffs of the nearby marina for pleasure boats.
The small La Marinella beach is less than 50 meters long and is located in the municipality of Sant’Agnello, which, like Sorrento, is located on a tufaceous terrace. In fact, to reach the sea from the nearby Piazzetta Marinella you have to go down a staircase or take the lift of the equipped bathing establishment that manages this strip of dark sand of volcanic origin, on which a free stretch is also usable.
Sorrento
The beach of Marina Piccola is located under the municipal villa of Sorrento, from which it can be reached via an elevator (the alternative is represented by the stairs from Piazza Tasso square), and it is adjacent to the port, at whose pier the ferries and hydrofoils moor traveling the routes for the main towns of the Gulf of Naples. It has both a free stretch and bathing establishments equipped with restaurants and bars, which increase the space available for bathing equipment with stilt houses that stretch from the shore to the facing cliffs, where sunbeds and umbrellas are also available.
The Sorrento seafront begins with the beach of Marina Grande, which extends along the homonymous street: right in front of what were once the fishermen’s houses, there is this thin strip of volcanic sand, about 200 meters long. On the side of the cliff on which Villa Tritone (also known as Villa Astor) stands, there is a free stretch, at the end of which there are small boats stranded and, later, an equipped bathing establishment with a fish restaurant.
Marine protected area of Punta Campanella
After Sorrento, the coast is bathed by sea waters safeguarded by a protected marine reserve: in fact, we find the beaches of Punta Campanella, with the addition of which it is possible to know all the places where you can go to the sea on the Sorrento Coast.
