Maritime connections Piombino – Rio Marina
Among the routes that ferries travel to get to Elba, the Piombino – Rio Marina one is used mostly by those who need to reach the eastern or south-eastern part of the Tuscan island. The route, of 9.2 nautical miles, takes a journey time of 45 minutes and is followed by the ships of the Toremar fleet.
The port of Piombino (New Maritime Station) is the only port from which ferries leave for the island of Elba. The piers from which the moorings leave are precisely the so-called Dente Nord Capitaneria, the Elba wharf and the Premuda square. The Piombinese territory is located in the province of Livorno, on the southern coast of the Tuscany region, at the border line between the Ligurian Sea and the Tyrrhenian Sea.
The port of Rio Marina, part of the Elban municipality of Rio, is the second on the island. The maritime station, located in Calata Voltoni, consists of a breakwater of about 100 meters and a dock of 250 meters where the ferries arriving from Piombino dock. Well connected to the local provincial road network, the port area is characterized by the Torrione, a sixteenth-century defensive tower with an octagonal base to which, in the nineteenth century, a turret with a clock was added.
The ferries operating on the route, which is traveled several times a day throughout the year with an increase in trips in the medium and high season, are the Giovanni Bellini and the Rio Marina Bella.
The first, with a length of approximately 71 meters, is equipped with an anti-roll system and can carry up to 589 passengers and 60 cars; among the services on board there are the bar, the solarium, totems to recharge the battery of the phones and Wi-Fi.
The second runs the route only during the summer period; with a length of 84 meters, it has a transport capacity of 896 passengers and 85 cars. Services include a cafeteria, a children’s play area, solarium, Wi-Fi and totems for charging electronic devices. This carrier too is equipped with a system of anti-roll stabilizers, which guarantees a pleasant crossing even in the presence of unfavorable weather and sea conditions.
Boarding is guaranteed only to those who show up at the terminal with a travel document and a valid identity document (even if they are minors) at least half an hour before the scheduled departure time.
