Ferries to Sardinia: when and how to disembark in Cagliari

All the cases in which it is advisable, in order to arrive in Sardinia, to opt for the Cagliari port are set out here, with information on the relevant routes.

Taking the ferry to Cagliari

Among the different ports of Sardinia (there are five in total) that welcome ferries for the transport of passengers with or without a vehicle, and where it is possible to disembark from the rest of Italy, it is convenient to choose Cagliari in certain circumstances. The landings of the island are in fact, as well as in the capital, in Arbatax, Olbia and Golfo Aranci and Porto Torres. After an overview of the Sardinian port cities and how to choose one based on your travel needs, let’s see in detail below the cases in which it is better to prefer the Cagliari port, how to do it and why.

Metropolitan City destination

The solution to this first case is quite obvious: when the destination of your trip is in the area of the Sardinian metropolitan city, you have to choose to disembark, of course, right in the port of Cagliari. It should be noted, however, that Assemini, Capoterra, Decimomannu, Elmas, Maracalagonis, Monserrato, Pula, Quartucciu, Quartu Sant’Elena, Sarroch, Selargius, Sestu, Settimo San Pietro, Sinnai, Uta and Villa San Pietro are part of the territory, as well as the municipality of the capital.

The passenger terminal is located about 400 meters from the entrance to the port area. A Shuttle Bus is available for all foot passengers who, getting off the ships, must reach the port entrance. If you do not disembark with your own vehicle, it will therefore be possible to effortlessly use the city buses of the CTM company that park at the entrance to the harbour area.

Province of South Sardinia destination

Even when you need to reach the areas of the Province of Southern Sardinia you don’t have a choice: in fact, you have to prefer, among the various Sardinian ports, that of the capital. From Cagliari you can quickly reach the territories (there are 107 municipalities) of the areas of Campidano, lower Marmilla, Sarcidano, Sarrabus, Trexenta and Sulcis-Iglesiente, as well as the Sulcis archipelago (whose islands the main ones are Sant’Antioco and San Pietro), and the islands of Serpentara, Cavoli and other smaller ones.

The intermodal center of Cagliari, where there are both the ARST and the railway stations, is located less than 200 meters from the port area, in Piazza Matteotti.

Also in these cases, the motivation is dictated by the greater proximity of these territories to the Cagliari port compared to the other ports in the region.

The province is bathed by the Tyrrhenian Sea and the Sea of Sardinia, and it includes attractive seaside resorts, such as Piscinas, the Costa Verde, Masua, Fontanamare, those of the Sulcitan archipelago, Porto Pino, Teulada, Chia, Villasimius and Costa Rei.
