The largest cruise ferries in the world on the Livorno – Olbia – Livorno route become two: the second arrives, also from a Chinese shipyard, in the Tuscan port for the first time in January 2024, helmed by Commander Massimo Pinsolo.
It is the Moby Legacy ship, which has a capacity of 3,000 passengers (441 cabins and 400 seats) and 3,850 linear meters of rolling cargo (1,300 cars or 300 trucks), like its sister flagship Moby Fantasy.
Moby Lines’ record-breaking ferries
Both built by CSSC Offshore & Marine Engineering (Group) Company Limited (COMEC), formerly Guangzhou Shipyard International Company Limited, on commission from the shipping company founded by Achille Onorato, these Ro/Pax ships are 237 meters long and 32 meters wide, with a gross tonnage of 69,500 tons.
The first record-breaking Fast Cruise Ferry of the company characterized by the symbol of the Blue Whale (which returns to the liveries for the occasion), Fantasy, entered service, also on the marine draft Livorno – Olbia and vice versa, in June 2023; the second, Legacy, do it in early 2024.
The shape of the hull, the efficiency of the engines, manufactured by the Finnish company Wärtsilä, and the predisposition to be powered by liquefied natural gas reduce polluting emissions and make the two new fast cruise ferries both high-performance and eco-sustainable (Eedi Phase certification 3).
Furthermore, the quality of the furnishings, equipment, cabins and common areas is comparable to that of cruise ships. There is no shortage of specific accommodations for passengers with reduced mobility and for those with pets in tow. Services include cabins, suites, à la carte restaurant, promenade, bistro, sports bar, children’s play area, outdoor bar, reception, seating area, Wi-Fi.
Legacy Promo Offer
By booking by 10/01/2024, with the special Promo Legacy offer the price for a passenger with car in tow for departures from 01/08/2024 to 09/30/2024 starts from €54.80 while supplies last of availability.
The shipping company of the Onorato Armatori s.p.a. Group and Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) operates on the Livorno-Olbia-Livorno line throughout the year, with several departures per day in high season.
The duration of the crossing during the day varies between seven and three quarters and nine hours, and at night between eight and a half and nine hours, depending on the carrier and the weather and sea conditions. Legacy, thanks to the 10.8 megawatts of engine power, can reach a cruising speed of 23.5 knots with peaks of 25 knots.
Considering the carrying capacity of the carrier, that’s a remarkable speed. Furthermore, the large number of seats and the fact that it can be powered by LNG should allow affordable fares in the future too.
