Where to swim in Linosa
On the small Linosa there is only a beach and a few rocky coves where you can swim, reachable from the ground. It is therefore not particularly visited by those who love stretches of sand, but it is the destination of a few “gourmets” of relaxation, boaters and scuba diving enthusiasts. After all, it is an area of about five square kilometers. The “Linosa and Lampione Islands Oriented Nature Reserve” protects most of the (very clear) waters facing the coastal strip and about half of the earth’s surface. We are on the only volcanic island of the Pelagie archipelago. Below we offer you the complete list of Linosan coastal places accessible by road or by footpaths.
Cala Pozzolana di Ponente beach
In Cala Pozzolana di Ponente there is the only beach, with black and dark gray sand of lava origin, made up of medium-grained grains and a pebble bottom. Near the shore there are outcropping rocks. Located on the slopes of the inactive volcano Monte Nero, the coast is embraced by a rocky wall whose colors change according to the brightness (reddish yellow, red, brown). On some areas of the beach, entirely free, there are fences, not to be crossed, because the caretta caretta turtles lay their eggs there. No bathing facilities are available, but there is a restaurant bar a few steps away, and the town is just over 700 meters away, reachable along Via Pozzolana. Right next to the beach there is the sea pier for hydrofoils and ferries arriving in Linosa, however the quality of the water is excellent.
Piscina Naturale (Natural Pool)
Piscina Naturale (Natural Pool) indicates a lava rock pool, with walls about two meters high, on the coastal strip, where you can immerse yourself or dive into the salt water in a spectacular naturalistic setting. There is no lack of water change because the pool, about ten meters deep, is connected to the open sea via an underwater tunnel and is perfectly suitable for swimming even when the sea is rough; indeed, in this case, the bathroom experience is even more suggestive. To get here, from Contrada Bovi Marini you have to walk, wearing comfortable shoes (not slippers), the Path of the Pool, indicated by clear signs.
Baia del Conte
Near Punta Beppe Tuccio, on the north-eastern end, where one of the island’s two lighthouses is located, a rocky strip extends into the water that plunges deeply into a series of arches. We are located precisely among the lava stones of the Baia del Conte, where there are pools of rocks in connection with the sea. The seabed is rocky.
Faraglioni
To get to the cove opposite the Faraglioni di Linosa (large rocks a few meters from the coast that form an inlet where the sea is never rough), the path to follow once you leave the road of Via Faraglioni is moderately demanding, among plants of capers and prickly pears. Both the cove and the seabed are composed of rocks. Here too, as in the rest of the shores of the island, the waters are crystal clear and full of fish.
