Ponza: all the beaches of the island and the rocky coves

Here is a list of beaches and rocky coves where you can swim on the island of Ponza.

Beaches in Ponza

The beaches of the island of Ponza are not many and not even big; the coast lines are jagged and often rocky and, given the volcanic origin, are mostly composed of kaolin and tuff. But there are also sandy coasts along the approximately twenty-five kilometers of coastline that enclose seven and a half square kilometers of land area. Below is a list of all practicable beaches (it is good practice, however, to check the practicability of the place by paying attention to any notices and signs), which can be reached comfortably enough from the road or by stairs, or through difficult paths, or even only by sea. There are many other bays in which to swim from the boat but the following list is perhaps more useful for those who intend to reach Ponza by ferry or hydrofoil. It is preferable to book in advance the sea transport trips, all of which can be found on this same website with the relative details.

Santa Maria beach

Located near the port of Ponza, from which it is 800 meters away, the beach of Santa Maria is a sandy beach behind which there is a hotel restaurant. In addition to lie down and swim, here it is possible to rent a boat or take a taxi-boat that also leads to the beach of Frontone.

Giancos beach

The small Giancos beach, free, with sand and pebbles and a sloping seabed, is not far from the port. In front of the town, it is close to a bar, supermarket and bakery. There is a kiosk bar.

Cala Feola beach

Cala Feola

The fine sandy beach of Cala Feola is great for families with children. The waters are shallow, there is an equipped bathhouse, a restaurant serving fresh fish and a snack bar. Not far from the port, the cove is separated from the main road, where there is free parking, by about two hundred steps. There are dinghies and boats that you can rent with or without a captain.

Frontone beach

Accessible, at a cost of about six euros, comfortably by sea with shuttles that depart from the port or the small bay of Santa Maria, or through a path that is not really easy, the beach of Frontone is of white sand and pebbles and is located at foot of an overhanging ridge. There is both a free section and one in concession to a bathing establishment with sunbeds and umbrellas. There are both bars and a restaurant, as well as a kiosk offering fruit and slushes.

La Parata beach

Difficult to reach from the ground due to a steep and impervious path, the small La Parata beach is not equipped but the sea, embraced by abundant wild vegetation, is spectacular.

Rocky coves in Ponza

To swim in Ponza you can also go to those rocky coves along the coast that are easily accessible, or to be reached via strenuous paths, or even just from the sea.

Natural swimming pools

Natural Pools (Piscine Naturali)

You have to walk about three hundred stairs to get to the cove of the Natural Pools (Piscine Naturali), but they are not very heavy to climb, there is also a boat service, and above all the landscape is surprising. Two large pools of sea water, including caves, Mediterranean flora and the open sea, where it is comfortable to dive despite the rocky bottom. There is a bar, boat rentals, umbrellas, deck chairs and sun loungers.

La Caletta

La Caletta

A short distance from the Natural Pools, there is a row of rocks that unfold into the crystal clear sea: La Caletta. It is reached via a staircase from a small road next to the Church of Le Forna. The cliff is flat and there is also the possibility to rent beach equipment and the bar.

Cala dell’Acqua

The flat rocks of Cala dell’Acqua gently slope down to the sea. You can reach the small bay even with vehicles, heading to the hamlet of Le Forna from the Ponza provincial road. The seabed is rocky but there are small and comfortable natural pools. If necessary, there are sun loungers and umbrellas for hire.

Cala Gaetano

Through three hundred steps that originate near the bus terminus of Le Forna, where there is also a small parking lot, you reach Cala Gaetano, a cove of rocks and cliffs bathed in crystal clear waters. The rocky bottoms are filled with marine life.
