Most of the beaches of the Amalfi Coast are pebbly, bathed by clear sea waters and located at the foot of charming seaside villages or set in the cliffs; we have selected 5 of them, the most beautiful, those that unequivocally contribute with their beauty to amplify the charm of the coast that extends from Positano to Vietri sul Mare.
The so-called “Divine Coast” is in the province of Salerno (Campania region), recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In the high tourist season it is invariably visited by the jet set and by tourists from all over the world, who appreciate its naturalistic, landscape and food and wine peculiarities.
The landscape is characterized by terraced gardens and cliffs overlooking the sea, in a natural setting rich in biodiversity. Culture is also important, made up of a varied heritage of peasant, mountain and maritime knowledge that has evolved with the internationalization of tourism but without losing its roots.
In the selection proposed below, beautiful places have been chosen for swimming, which are located in the towns of Amalfi, the one from which the coast takes its name, Positano, Maiori and Minori. These territories can also be reached by ferries to the Amalfi Coast departing from important ports in Campania in the summer, as soon as the tourist season begins.
Most beautiful beaches of the Amalfi Coast
Here (with their descriptions) are the most beautiful places to go to the beach on the Amalfi Coast, from the last to the first of the five.
5) Salicerchie (Maiori)
In Maiori, in the Salicerchie bay, there is the homonymous beach, just 40 meters long, with its pebbles bathed by spectacularly clear emerald waters; it is in fact also called Acquachiara (clear water in Italian). A free stretch is available as well as a bathing establishment with bar. Furthermore, the more fearless, swimming towards the Norman Tower, can reach from here the so-called Grotta Suffregna, a cave at the bottom of which sulphurous water emerges. The slopes are characterized by steep slopes, sparse urbanization and cultivated terraces.
4) Marina Grande (Amalfi)
The Marina Grande of Amalfi has excellent waters despite being located in an inlet close to the town center and the port, and it is a very popular expanse of sand and pebbles, with many bathing services (to be booked, given the influx) and restaurants, about 150 meters long and quite wide. On the sides there are two stretches of free use. The iconic coastline is rocky and jagged, with terraces down to sea level, and it is a real postcard of the coast.
3) Spiaggia Grande (Positano)
More than 400 meters long, the Spiaggia Grande of Positano is made of sand and pebbles, adjacent to the renowned coastal village. The coast is high, rocky, and the sea is crystal clear. There are several bathing establishments equipped with restaurant and bar services. The free sections are managed by the municipality and are also subject to a fee, although at a lower rate than that of the concessionaires. Given the turnout, booking is essential.
2) Fornillo (Positano)
In the municipality of Positano, there is also the Fornillo beach, about 250 meters long, sandy or pebbly depending on the area. The zone is characterized by the high and rocky coast covered with Mediterranean scrub except on the highest point, where there is the town. There are both bathing establishments and free stretches, bars and restaurants. The water quality is excellent.
1) Erchie (Maiori)
In the municipality of Maiori, precisely in the hamlet of Erchie, there is the homonymous, delightful, sandy beach, with pebbles especially on the sides and near the shore. Both equipped and with a free stretch, the Marina di Erchie is located at the foot of a high, rocky and jagged coast, with vegetated slopes and a steep slope to the north of the stretch; it is bordered to the east by the La Cerniola Tower, a limestone fortification erected on a cliff, restored and currently in excellent condition. The quality of the bathing water is excellent.
Selection criteria
The selection was made by evaluating all the beaches on the Amalfi Coast, reachable by land or by taxi-boat, excluding the rocky coves. These fantastic 5, as well as splendid landscape or naturalistic features, all have bathing waters that have been classified as excellent in recent years. The selection criteria concerned the surrounding landscape, the granularity of the sand and the quality of the sea.
