Limitations on the inflow and movement of vehicles on the islands

During the tourist season, on those smaller Italian islands that have certain characteristics, it is not possible for many categories of people to disembark with their vehicle in tow.

With some legislative decrees in force for decades, limitations have been established on the influx and road traffic in the small islands where there are municipalities declared to be residence or care. The so-called landing bans can be ordered if the extra-urban road network of the island territories does not exceed 50 kilometers and the difficulties and dangers of car traffic are particularly intense. Each year the Ministry of Sustainable Infrastructure and Mobility, after consulting the regions and municipalities concerned, may restrict and/or prohibit the inflow and use of motor vehicles and mopeds belonging to persons who are not part of the stable population of the islands during the high season months and tourist movement.

Prohibitions and exceptions in the various archipelagos

In recent years, in principle, for the islands of the Campania archipelago the ban on landings for non-resident vehicles has been in force from the Easter holiday period to October (in Capri also during the Christmas period); for the Tremiti archipelago from April; for the Aeolian archipelago from May / June; for the Pelagie islands (Linosa) from June; for the Egadi Islands from mid June; for the islands of Ustica, of Giglio and Giannutri only in August.

Usually for the island of Ischia, unlike for Capri and Procida, the ban applies only to those who are resident in the Campania Region. Some Ischia municipalities ask for exceptions for those families of people residing in Campania who demonstrate that they stay for at least 15 days in a private house, with a regular rental contract, or for 7 days in a hotel located in the suburbs.

All the smaller islands involved have particular exceptions to the limitation to the inflow and movement of vehicles. In addition, exceptions to ambulances and police vehicles, tourist buses, vehicles used to transport things and vehicles for people with disabilities are always provided in general.

As soon as it becomes official, we will share all the details and updates for the new year of the various bans on the inflow and circulation of vehicles on the islands concerned.
