Trekking and kayaking on Elba, three days to discover the island

Elba Sea & Mountains: program of trekking and kayak excursions to get to know the most unexplored and evocative places of the largest island of the Tuscan Archipelago in January.

“Elba sea and mountains” from 6th to 8th January 2023

Three guided excursions (two in trekking mode and one in kayak) and two overnight stays in a hotel: this is the event that aims to make people discover the winter beauty of the island of Elba. The program prepared by Econauta.net starts on 6 January 2023 at 9:00 with meeting point at the port of Rio Marina. You have the opportunity to explore the Elba environment, with its Mediterranean maquis, woods, fortresses and the sea, but above all with the rhythms of nature, walking along paths between brooms, holm oaks, lentisks, tamarisks, yews, hornbeams, heather, pines, admiring the panoramas from the highest peaks and paddling in the clear sea in winter to skirt the wild slopes and at the same time do birdwatching, among peregrine falcons, herring gulls, shore pigeons, cormorants and gannets. The groups that will be formed will be of a maximum of eight people. In case of unsuitable weather conditions, the routes can be modified.

After disembarking, you will be transferred by minibus to Rio nell’Elba to begin the trekking route. The trekking and kayaking program

Volterraio fortress

On the 1st day (Friday 6 January 2023) the first of two guided trekking excursions is scheduled. You go to discover the peaks and fortresses of the eastern side of the island up to Le Prade. The length of the route is 14 kilometers (height difference 1057 meters). You arrive on Monte Strega, then on Monte Capannello and on the highest peak of Eastern Elba, Cima del Monte, to then descend towards the fortress of Volterraio and then on the beach of Magazzini and on that of Le Prade, inside the harbor of Portoferraio, from where you are transferred by minibus to San Piero in Campo for dinner and overnight stay.

Kayak excursion

On the 2nd day (Saturday 7 January 2023) the guided kayak excursion is scheduled. After breakfast, you will be accompanied by minibus to the beach of Lacona, from where the kayak excursion begins up to Marina di Campo along a 10 km route. The kayaks are equipped (paddle, life jacket, splash guard, dry bag). You reach Punta della Contessa and the beach of Laconella. Paddling towards Capo Fonza you reach the Secche di Penco and then the Coralline, to then enter the sea cave called Buca dell’Acqua, where a fresh water spring flows, and then into the Gulf of Marina di Campo. It continues passing through the coves of Cala al Fico and Ripa Nera and rounding Punta alle Mete. After having passed in front of the Cala del Longio, you stop on the beach of Fonza. You then continue to the cove of Ischia and the rock of Porto Caccamo, to arrive at the beach of Marina di Campo, the largest on the island of Elba, from where you are transferred by minibus to San Piero.

Summit of Monte Capanne

On the 3rd day (Sunday 8 January 2023), after breakfast you go by minibus to Monte Perone to make a circular route of 9 kilometres. This second guided trekking excursion takes place at a maximum altitude of 1019 meters above sea level, with a vertical drop of 990 metres. You begin to climb Monte Maolo to proceed on the Ferrale ridge, to then begin the climb to the highest peak of the island of Elba, that of Monte Capanne, from where all the islands of the Tuscan Archipelago and Corsica are visible. Descend towards the crest of the Filicaie to go up again on Monte Calanche, up to the top. Going down, you pass through the rock shelter of Grotta alle Pecore to return to Monte Perone. You will be accompanied by minibus to the port of Portoferraio for the departure of the return to the mainland.
