What is the difference between ferry and hydrofoil? Pros and cons

The good choice for everyone does not even exist in sea transport; both ferries and hydrofoils have advantages and disadvantages and a lot depends on your needs.

Differences

The definitions of these two sailing units clarify their differences and also begin to bring out their respective pros and cons. The ferry is a ship characterized in particular by the folding closure at the stern, a functional element for the direct embarkation of vehicles, used to ferry cars and motorcycles, passengers, goods, railway trains. The hydrofoil is instead a faster boat, equipped with submerged load-bearing wings on the hull that allow it to be lifted over the water surface and consequently quickly with less energy consumption. Currently, however, hydrofoils also mean those special types of fast passenger craft (single hull or catamarans) which allow you to travel quickly, in not too adverse weather conditions, short trajectories in principle. However, the term “ferries” now identifies all the means (at most of medium size) of maritime transport that regularly ferry people and/or things on not very long routes.

Characteristics of the ferry

The main advantage of the ferry is the possibility of boarding your own vehicle. Many times the vehicle can dock at the arrival with the opposite end to the departure one. Also it has more stability on the water for its larger size. In fact, they guarantee races even when the sea is very rough. The seats are more comfortable and spaced and there is a wider range of services on board: in addition to the usual bar, it is easy to find a TV room, video games, but also play areas for children. There will probably be an opportunity to take an outdoor walk on the decks of the ship and to sit in the appropriate outdoor areas. The large spaces, even inside, guarantee greater freedom of movement. As for the walks, if you take children outside, it will be important to pay the utmost attention for the entire duration of the trip. Ticket prices are lower than those of hydrofoils.

Characteristics of the hydrofoil

The hydrofoil and the catamaran (which is made up of two symmetrical and parallel hulls joined by a bridge) belong to that category of boats to choose if you prefer speed. They represent the perfect choice because they offer the possibility to reducing travel times compared to ships, to convenient prices even if greater. Even boarding and disembarking operations become much smoother and faster. However, it is not always possible to book them, as they are usually used for short and medium-length routes and more rarely for long ones; in this case it is certainly a possibility not to be missed.
