The ports of the island of Ischia
Among the six municipalities of the island of Ischia we find five ports; in fact only in Barano there is not one, while those of Lacco Ameno and Sant’Angelo are used to receive only private boats. The remaining three, however, are served by public sea transport. That of Ischia Porto (the main port) and the port of Casamicciola, welcome ferries, hydrofoils and catamarans. The other, the port of Forio, is served exclusively by fast boats.
When it comes to choosing where to land, the factors that influence the decision can easily be the precise place of destination and whether or not to travel with a vehicle. If you are on foot it would be better to take the hydrofoil, not from an economic point of view (it costs more) but because it is faster. Although it must be said that the ferry crossing has its own charm, as well as having a lower price. For those who are not in a hurry and are lovers of salty air and sea and coastal horizons it can represent the optimal option, regardless of the circumstance of moving with your car.
Where to land
Once we know where to take the ferry we then have to decide where exactly to land. Much also depends on the area in which you are going to stay. In fact, if your final destination is in the western and southern areas (Forio, Panza, S. Angelo) and you travel without a car, it is better to disembark right at the terminal of Forio, so as to cancel, or at least shorten, the use of buses, almost always crowded in the summer seasons, or by taxi (both available in the vicinity of each port) for about ten kilometers.
Some hydrofoils (all those of the Snav Company that make their way to the island) dock in Casamicciola Terme with an intermediate stop in Procida. If you embark with a vehicle instead there is not much difference in arriving in the town of Ischia or that of Casamicciola. In this case the choice of the port of departure and the routes available at that time to reach the island of Ischia weigh on the choice; however, it would be advisable to check if for the selected route is previewed the port of call to Procida, which increases the duration of navigation by a quarter of an hour or twenty minutes. Direct runs may therefore be preferable.
Upon arrival, since the port of Ischia is the most operational in terms of embarkation and disembarkation of any type of naval unit, in most cases you will land right here. You can also choose a hydrofoil that, after an intermediate stop in this important landing place, continues the route to get to Forio. If you intend to land at this last maritime station you will need an appropriate ticket which will be slightly higher.
