Due to its geographical location, Bastia is the gateway to Corsica. Thousands of ships full of tourists pass through its port area every year, eager to get to know the fascinating Corsican territory.
The importance of the city is also evidenced by the presence, in the immediate vicinity of the town, of an international airport, that of Bastia-Poretta, which connects the northern part of Corsica to the most important European countries.
Being the main one of the entrances to the island, however, is not an aspect that always benefits the city. It often happens, in fact, that visitors prefer to move to other places in Corsica neglecting Bastia. The capital of Upper Corsica, on the other hand, is rich in history and monuments of absolute artistic importance (just think of the Palazzo dei Governatori, the church of San Giovanni Battista, etc.).
The Basti hinterland too, like the city center, deserves to be explored. Particularly noteworthy are the suggestive Cathedral of Lucciana (dating back to the 12th century and surrounded by an archaeological site) and the Pond of Biguglia, a lagoon that is part of the homonymous nature reserve and where hundreds of species of birds nest.
