The port of Chania is located in Suda Bay, a large inlet on the northwest coast of the island of Crete, between Punta Monaco, near Akrotiri, and Cape Drepano, seven kilometers southeast of the city of Chania and fifteen kilometers from the Ioannis Daskalogiannis International Airport. Ferries to Piraeus (Athens) operate in the large natural harbor and there is a base for the Greek navy and NATO.
To get to the port from the rest of the island there are KTEL bus rides and taxis.
At the entrance to the bay there are several islets characterized by Venetian fortifications. Suda Island gives the bay its name.
