Halki

The island of Halki, also called Chalki, is part of the Dodecanese archipelago and it is located in the south-eastern Aegean Sea, six kilometers away from Rhodes. The territory of 28 square kilometers is inhabited by about 480 people. The terrain is mostly mountainous: the highest mountains are Merovigli (593 metres) and Profeta Ilias (578 metres). The 34 kilometers of coastline are often steep and rocky, but there is no shortage of beaches, including Kania, Ftenagia, with sand and pebbles, Pondamos, which can also be reached on foot or by minibus; on the small island it is not possible to move with your own vehicle or even with a rental one, but an efficient taxi-boat service is available, which can be very useful if you want to go to the beaches of the northern coast (Areta, San George, Yiali , Trachia, Ghiali). The sea is everywhere pristine and spectacular. The salient features of the island, not beaten by mass tourism, are tranquility and nature.

Nimborio, also called Emborio or Emporium is the inhabited center made up of colored houses with neoclassical architecture, near which there is the homonymous, small port where the ferries and hydrofoils dock to connect Halki to Athens or other Aegean islands. In the archaeological site of Pefkia, the remains of three temples that were erected in honor of Apollo are visible. During the 14th century the Knights of Rhodes granted Halki as a fief to the Assanti family of Ischia and they built a fortress on the ruins of the ancient acropolis. The Castle of the Knights can be reached via a path that climbs from the church of Panagia in Chorio. The Church of Panagia Choriani is located above an ancient abandoned village and it has remarkable frescoes inside. The Church of Agios Nikolaos is the imposing religious building located in the town, where the Clock Tower also stands out, built thanks to the donations of the many island emigrants. The massive emigration was caused by the decline of the economic activities linked to the collection of marine sponges, which have now disappeared. On the hill overlooking the town you can see old windmills. Hiking or scuba diving enthusiasts can have fun along the numerous paths or thanks to the local diving.
