The port area of Porto Vecchio is located at the end of a canal located in the south-eastern part of Corsica. It is basically divided into two parts: one dedicated to pleasure boats and another intended to accommodate ferries. The latter area is characterized by the presence of a massive quay where ships from, among others, the ports of Marseille, Civitavecchia, Naples and Golfo Aranci dock .
One of the shipping companies that serves the Corsican port is Moby.
To reach the Municipality of Porto Vecchio it is possible to choose between various solutions.
From Sardinia - Take the ferry that from Santa Teresa di Gallura takes you, within an hour, to Bonifacio. Near the port area you can rent a car (or a two-wheeled vehicle) or buy a ticket for one of the buses that connect Bonifacio to Porto Vecchio.
From Figari - Outside the international airport of the same name you will have the opportunity to take the bus that will take you directly to Porto Vecchio, without intermediate stops. The number of daily trips increases as the summer season approaches. To keep up to date, we advise you to consult the Tourist Office portal.
Alternatively, outside the airport, you can rent a vehicle with which to reach Porto Vecchio.
For some years, in the city, a free electric shuttle service has been active, which will allow you to move from one point to another in Porto Vecchio without excessive effort.
As reported in the previous paragraph, the international airport of Figari - Corsica del Sud is connected to the Municipality of Porto Vecchio by means of a bus service, whose station is located right on the port.
The ticket offices of the shipping companies that serve the port of Porto Vecchio are located inside the maritime station.
In the city of Porto Vecchio there is a whole series of commercial activities where to shop. Strolling along the streets of the center, in fact, you will come across shops of clothing, cosmetics, jewelrs, knives and so on.
Weekly markets are also set up in the municipal area, where it is possible to taste local food and wine products and buy much more. Among the most famous are the producers market, the textile market, the holm oak market and the Santa Lucia market.
Not far from the port is the suggestive historic center of Porto Vecchio, the so-called Citadel. The latter - located in the upper part of the Municipality - was accessed (and is still accessed) through the Genoese Gate. Those who visit the ancient part of Porto Vecchio for the first time are pleasantly struck by the fact that the houses are made of stone and that the streets and sidewalks are variously paved (in the first as well as in the second case, it is generally porphyry).
Walking along the alleys, it is impossible not to notice what remains of the fortification system that surrounded the city protecting it from external attacks. In particular, the ancient walls and bastions are still visible: among these, the Bastion de France stands out (whose construction, like the others, dates back to 1539).
In the heart of the Citadel stands one of the most important monuments of Porto Vecchio: the church of San Giovanni Battista. Erected on a previous place of worship, it is made of granite, is rich in works of exquisite workmanship and is also characterized by the presence of a bell tower. In front of the church there is another religious building: we are talking about the chapel of Santa Croce, dating back to the seventeenth century.
