Located on the eastern side of Elba, about 8 kilometers south of the port of Cavo, the port of Rio Marina historically was born as a commercial outlet for the iron mines present on the island.
After the extraction activities were discontinued, the port was converted into a terminal for ferries in connection with Piombino (45min) and Pianosa (1h 50min). Another part of the port area, on the other hand, is used for yachting (approx. 200 berths) .
The port of Rio Marina can be reached by bus, taxi and by car and scooter (useful info for those who are already on the island).

Times and frequency of the line vary according to the time of year, with an increase in connections during the tourist season.

As mentioned at the beginning, the history of the port of Rio Marina is linked to the mining activity that has affected the eastern side of the island of Elba. Inevitably, therefore, the first thing to see, once disembarking in Rio Marina, or even before embarking from Rio Marina, is the Mining Museum which is located just a hundred meters from the port (Palazzo del Burò, Via Magenta 26).
A precious testimony on the historical-cultural heritage of the Elban quarries, whose activity - we remember - definitively ceased only in the 80s of the last century. If there is enough time, the visit should be integrated with another visit to the Archaeological Civic Museum of the Mining Districtwhich, however, is located further inland, about 4 kilometers away.
For the rest, the one in Rio Marina, and more generally in the entire municipality of Rio, is a holiday dedicated to sea, sun and beaches. En passant we only point out the beaches near the port, which are: La Torre, just 250 meters away, and therefore easily reachable on foot, and the Portello beach which, instead, is located just over a kilometer, after the former Vigneria mining site.
