The port of Karpathos is the maritime station of the second largest island of the Dodecanese, and it is located precisely in the coastal town of Pigadia, the capital of the territory, on the south-east coast. Maritime connections are active all year round with the islands of Rhodes, Kasos and Halki of the Dodecanese, and with the islands of Milos, Anafi and Santorini in the Cyclades. Ferries departing from Karpathos also sail on round-trip routes to the port of Sitia in Crete and Piraeus (Athens). In summer there are also connections with the Cretan port of Heraklion.
The KTEL bus service is in place on the island of Karpathos even if the frequency of the runs is limited (some daily runs are made on the main routes). The advice, if you want to try to avoid renting a car (it also depends on where you intend to stay), is to find the updated timetables upon arrival at the port, at the bus terminus, which is right in Pigadia, opposite Gergatsoulis supermarket. If you are in Pigadia, to reach the port of Scarpanto, the maximum distance to travel should not exceed one kilometre, which can perhaps also be covered on foot. But from other locations or if you have a lot of luggage, the ideal solution is a taxi.
The connections between the airport and the port of Scarpanto, which are about 15 kilometers away, are guaranteed by a KTEL bus line but the frequency of the rides is not very high. The possibility of taking a taxi can be considered. Outside the airport, as well as the port, there is a taxi stand.
On the port there is an unguarded and free open-air car park. There are also other public or private car parks nearby.
A very short distance from the town centre, among the services at the port we find the bus terminus, the taxi stand and vehicle rental agency.
Since the distance from the center of the village of Pigadia is a few tens of meters from the pier where you disembark, there are supermarkets, bars, taverns, restaurants, bank, pharmacy and shops.
To visit, in the immediate vicinity of the port, the Archaeological Museum of Karpathos, as well as the Panagia Evangelistria, the main church of Pigadia and the first that the visitor sees coming from the sea, with a dome, iconostasis in sculpted white marble and an external courtyard. About 300 meters away we find the archaeological site of Agia Triada.
