Located in the northern part of Morocco, the port of Tangier is characterized by a large quay for cruise traffic and an area dedicated to the mooring of pleasure boats.
Tangier - which is the main port of call in Morocco - is connected to some ports in continental Europe (Genoa , Savona , Sète and Barcelona).
The companies serving the Moroccan port include Grimaldi Lines and GNV (Grandi Navi Veloci).
An hour's drive from the port of Tangier, in Oued Rmel , is the port of Tangier Med. Inaugurated in 2007, its strategic position on the Strait of Gibraltar has allowed the port to become, within a few years, an essential point of reference for trade (and in particular for the transshipment of containers). Inside we find, among other things, also a passenger terminal.
There are various ways to get from one point to another in Tangier. For bridging short distances, it is possible to move around on foot . Alternatively, you can rely on the buses of the CTM (Compagnie de Transports au Maroc) and Supratours.
If none of these options work for you, you can always rent a car or take a petit taxi.
Since 2009 the port of Tangier Med has been connected to that of Tangier thanks to the Tangier-Porto Tangeri Med railway line.
The city is served by the Tangier-Ibn Battuta airport, which is located 15 km southwest of the port area.
To reach the city center and the port of Tangier, the only viable alternatives are two: rent a car or take a taxi.
The port is just under 4 km from the Tanger Ville train station. To reach it, you can take a bus, a taxi or rent a car.
Trains depart from Tangier Ville that will take you to other well-known Moroccan locations and the port of Tangier Med. The railways are managed by the ONCF (the Office National des Chemins de Fer).

The most typical shops of Tangier is located in the Medina, the ancient and picturesque old town city located not far away from the port of call.
One of the first places to visit once you arrive in Tangier is the Medina, the old city, which is accessed through the Bab al-Fahs, a door that overlooks the Grande Socco, the square around which numerous souks insist, the mosque of Sidi Bou Abib and the Jardin de La Mendoubia (known for its centenary trees).
Strolling along the labyrinthine streets of the old town, you will come across the Great Mosque of Tangier. The building, commissioned by Sultan Mulay Isma'il, was built on the ruins of a Portuguese cathedral and a Roman temple consecrated to the demigod Hercules. One of the architectural elements that most fascinates visitors is undoubtedly the imposing minaret that dominates the complex and which is visible from different points of the city.
Near the Great Mosque you will find the square of the Piccolo Socco, near which there is a church dedicated to the Virgin, called the Purisima. This place of worship holds a singular record: it is in fact the only building of this kind, in the whole of Morocco, to be found in the perimeter of a medina. Also on the square is the famous Café Central, where it is a must to take a break and sip mint tea.
You cannot say that you have been to Tangier if you have not visited the Kasbah, which is the upper part of the old city. Inside the fortified citadel you can admire the Kasbah mosque and the museum, housed in what was once the sultan's palace.
The new city (the Ville Nouvelle) is also full of places to discover. Near the Place de France you will find the Gran Café de Paris, the Hotel El Minzah and above all the Terrasse des Paresseux, one of the most panoramic places in the city. Don't forget to take a relaxing walk along the Corniche, Tangier's seafront.
Finally, the beaches deserve a mention. Among the closest to the port we find plage Merkala, plage municipale, plage Malabata, plage Ghandouri and plage Mrisat.
