Located a few nautical miles from the Argentario promontory, the island of Giglio is one of the main tourist destinations of the Tuscan archipelago. The Gigliese port can be reached in just 60 minutes from the port of Porto Santo Stefano, from which numerous ferries and private boats leave in summer. During the summer the island is literally besieged by tourists from Italy and abroad, who show that they appreciate the amenity of its edenic landscape , the sunny beaches and the splendid waters that surround it.
Rich in monuments and places that will capture your attention, the island is made up of three urban agglomerations (Giglio Porto, Giglio Castello and Giglio Campese). The one of Giglio Castello - which develops around the Rocca Aldobrandesca - has been included in the list of the most beautiful villages in Italy.
On the occasion of the feast of the patron saint San Mamiliano (which occurs on September 15), the procession, the quadrille and the characteristic Donkey Palio take place in Giglio Castello. As far as the culinary tradition is concerned, among the most peculiar local products the panficato (a dessert made with figs, walnuts, jam, orange peel and fruit) and the Ansonaco wine stand out .
The island was also one of the locations of the film "The great beauty" by Paolo Sorrentino, who in 2014 won the Oscar for best foreign film with this film.
