Located on the eastern side of the island, the Giglio harbor consists of a main pier dock where the ships ferry from the nearby port of Porto Santo Stefano (the distance between the two airports is 10.8 nautical miles, equal to 20 about km).
The port area of Giglio is also equipped with piers for pleasure boats. The maritime connections to and from the mainland increase with the approach of the summer season, when the island - and more generally Orbetello and the Argentario - once again become the destination of a considerable holiday flow.
The public road service is managed by Tiemme Toscana Mobilità, which connects the three main towns of Giglio (Giglio Porto, Giglio Castello and Giglio Campese) *.
In addition to public transport, you can also get around by renting a car, a scooter or a bike. Alternatively, you will have the opportunity to take a taxi or use the NCC service.
If you want to arrive on the island with your car, before leaving, check that it is possible during the period of your stay.
* Travel tickets can be purchased at the ticket office located at the terminus of Giglio Porto (via Umberto I) or in bars and businesses that display the transport company logo. Alternatively, tickets can be purchased through the myCicero app. As for season tickets, they must be signed at the Stefanini Davide tobacconist in Piazza Gloriosa in Giglio Castello.
Toremar, Giglio Porto
Near the port of Giglio there are several commercial activities: a boutique, a jewelery shop, a souvenir shop, an ice cream parlor, etc.
The island of Giglio is a treasure chest that houses numerous historical monuments. Among these, the Church of San Pietro undoubtedly emerges, located in the hamlet of Giglio Castello. The church - the main one on the island - houses the treasure of Pope Innocent XIII, the relics of San Mamiliano (protector of the Tuscan archipelago) and the very precious ivory crucifix, the work of the Flemish sculptor Jean de Boulogne.
Another place of considerable interest is the Rocca aldobrandesca (also called Rocca Pisana) of Giglio Castello, a village defended by the homonymous walls. The Giglio area is characterized by the presence of numerous coastal towers: the Torre del Saraceno, the Torre del Campese and the Torre del Lazzaretto. In the port area, it is also possible to see the remains of a Roman villa (and in particular of a cetara, that is a tank used for fish farming).
The main beaches of the island are the Arenella beach, the beach of Cannelle, the Caldane beach and the beach of Campese. The island has two lighthouses: that of the Fenaio in the north and that of the Capel Rosso in the southern part.
