Located in the eastern part of the island, that of Salina (Santa Marina) is one of the two ports on the island, administratively divided into three municipalities (Leni, Malfa and, precisely, Santa Marina Salina). It is characterized by the presence of a pier where the hydrofoils that sail from Sicily, the Peninsula and the other islands of the archipelago moor.
Fast and daily connections are guaranteed by Messina, Milazzo and the other Aeolian islands. During the weekend, moreover, there are runs from Naples Mergellina. Finally, during the summer, a section is active from Salerno.
The port of Salina (Santa Marina) can be reached by bus, taxi and by bike and scooter (useful info for those who are already on the island).
Bus: the public transport service by road of the island of Salina is carried out by CITIS (Inter-municipal Consortium for the Salina Island).
Taxi: near the port there are several activities that perform this service.
Bicycles and scooters: there are shops in the area that rent cars, bikes and other means of transport.
The hydrofoil ticket office is located near the pier.
Various activities are located near the port area: pastry; clothing stores, food, typical products; pharmacy; rental boats, rafts and car etcetera.
The island of Salina has been inhabited since ancient times. To prove this, among other things, is the prehistoric village of Portella, located in the northeastern part of the island and brought to light in 1954. Thanks to the finds found on site, it was possible to set up one of the main museums of the island, that of Lingua (village known for the homonymous salt lake, which owes the name of Salina).
Other places to visit are certainly the church of San Bartolomeo, that of Maria Santissima Addolorata and that of Santa Marina, patron saint of the homonymous municipality. In the port area there is a road named after the actor Massimo Troisi, who together with Philippe Noirethe shot some scenes of "Il Postino" on the island of Salina.
For lovers of greenery and long walks it will be possible to immerse yourself in the lush vegetation of the "Le Montagne delle Felci e dei Porri" nature reserve, a protected area since 1984. There are also routes to discover the so-called "Caves of the Saracens" , excavated in the tuff by the locals to escape pirate raids.
