Unlike Lampedusa, of which it is administratively part, Linosa does not have an airport. Therefore, the port is the most important infrastructure of the island and territorial continuity is ensured by maritime connections with Lampedusa and Porto Empedocle.
The port is located on the southern side of Linosa and has three piers, in order to offer one or more alternatives for the mooring of ships, depending on the wind. There are also both fishing boats and pleasure craft.
The distance between the two islands is about 2h and 40min by ferry and 60min by hydrofoil; while, for Porto Empedocle, it takes about 7h by ferry and 3h by hydrofoil.
The frequency of connections varies throughout the year, with the peak in the summer months.
Linosa has an area of about 5 square kilometers so it can be easily explored on foot. On site you can rent electric bikes and scooters.
Although approximately 40 kilometers (21 nautical miles) away, Linosa is administratively part of Lampedusa. Therefore, it is possible to arrive by plane in Lampedusa and from there continue by ferry or hydrofoil towards Linosa (see Connections Airport-Port of Lampedusa).
The ticket office is located in Via Principe Umberto approx. 600mt from the port of Linosa.
Near the port of Linosa there are various activities: food shops; diving center; restaurants; pescheria etcetera.
Those who want a holiday off the beaten path of mass tourism will do well to choose Linosa. To say, even in August, the period of maximum tourist turnout for the Pelagie archipelago, in Linosa the number of visitors remains lower than in Lampedusa.
It is not the only difference. Unlike Lampedusa and Lampione, in fact, Linosa has a volcanic nature. The volcanic black of the coast is one of the most fascinating elements of the island, even more when compared with the blue of the sea and the typically Mediterranean colors of the houses.
For the rest, it is a type of holiday suitable for lovers of trekking and scuba diving. The former can go on excursions to Monte Vulcano, Monte Rosso and Monte Nero; divng enthusiasts, on the other hand, are spoiled for choice. Among the many alternatives available, we point out the Sicchitella diving, according to many experts one of the most beautiful in the Mediterranean.
Obviously, those who do not have the passion for cylinders and freediving can choose the classic boat trip with a stop and swim in the most suggestive coves and inlets of Linosa. We are talking about unique habitats in the world, breeding places for different species of animals: from the Caretta Caretta turtles to the Berta Maggiore, a bird that chooses the high coasts of Linosa to nest.
Finally, special mention for gastronomy: Linosa is famous for the cultivation of lentils, capers and prickly pears. Simple productions able, however, to guarantee a balanced diet together with the generous catch of this part of the Mediterranean.
